Lubrication Division |
Lubrication No bearing can survive
without it. |
What is lubrication, lubrication is a method of applying a
lubricant to moving mating faces, lubricant is an oil or a grease,
a lubricating grease is an oil containing thickeners generally
in the form of metallic soaps.
Consideration of the lubricants consistency, operating temperature
range and rust inhibiting properties must be considered.
All rolling bearings as a rule can be lubricated with grease
or oil.
|
Problems due to poor lubrication are the wrong lubricant,
not enough or too much lubricant, no lubricant and foreign bodies
acting as abrasives or corrosives.
|
Health & Safety issues are slips, trips and falls, dermatitis
(inflammation of the skin), COSSH awareness, HASAWA health and
safety at work act, PPE personal protective equipment, and environmental
issues.
|
Reasons for bearing failure are generally, overheating caused
by the wrong type of grease or oil, too much grease or oil,
to little or no lubricant.
Noisy bearings and frequent replacement are caused by using
the wrong type of grease or oil, or a foreign matter acting
as an abrasive or a corrosive, or to little or no lubrication.
|
Grease failure, cage pockets and rims worn, grease dry and
hard, bearing will have signs of discolouration, common failure
where the temperatures are too high for the lubricant used.
Overheating, the bearing parts are blackened or showing signs
of temper discolouration, loss of hardness on all parts, and
the lubricant charred or missing.
Abrasive wear, working surfaces are dull and signs of metal
removal without loss of hardness, abrasive particles are not
usually metallic.
|
Molten cage, bearing cage melted down to the rivets and the
inner race showing signs of temper discolouration, due to lubrication
failure at high speed
.
|
As you can see the role of the people responsible for ensuring
the equipment is lubricated with the correct choice of lubricant
at the correct period is “vital”
|
We at M&M Asset Maintenance Ltd can supply and install from a single
point automatic lubricator, to a complex system of positive
displacement or progressive lubrication systems.
